Job Title: Domestic & Sexual Violence Advocate/Prevention Specialist
Working Hours: 35 hours per week
Compensation: Salary is commensurate with experience
Job Summary: The Domestic and Sexual Violence Advocate/Prevention Specialist is a non-exempt position. The Advocate will focus on providing supportive counseling, advocacy and case management services to survivors of domestic and/or sexual violence. The primary role of the Advocate will involve providing intensive, comprehensive, and culturally competent services for Nantucket. With a focus on primary prevention strategies, the Prevention Specialist will develop and oversee The Empower Program to ensure that prevention education remains a central part of A Safe Place’s work in the community.
Job Requirements:
• B.A. in liberal arts or social science field such as Psychology, Sociology, Women’s and/or Gender Studies.
• Experience and/or training around community organizing
• Completion of domestic violence and sexual assault pre-service training within first year of employment
• Professional appearance and presentation
• Good written and verbal skills
• Computer proficiency (Windows, Excel, Adobe)
• Be able to work competently under pressure, have non-judgmental attitude and adhere to agency, state and national policies regarding confidentiality.
• Ability to work independently or as part of a team
• Ability to relate to diverse populations including non-English speaking families, the GBLT community and individuals with histories of substance abuse and/or mental illness
• Willing to learn about and actively use multicultural awareness and understanding in daily work
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Maintain calendar/schedule of agency outreach and education activities
• Identify, research and implement successful abuse prevention programs at all age levels
• Coordinate volunteers for outreach and education activities
• Provide supportive counseling, advocacy and case management for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.
• Assist with the development, implementation, and coordination of an organized and standard agency training for new volunteers and staff
• Provide victims with resources for housing, immigration and legal assistance
• Provide victims with community resource materials/referral information and victim compensation assistance
• Assist with developing and carrying out RPE (Rape Prevention Education) goals and objectives
• Attend and participate in all staff meetings
• Attend trainings and professional development opportunities regarding prevention of domestic violence and sexual assault in daily work
• Receive 1 hour of Clinical Supervision per 20 hours of direct client services or a minimum of 1 hour per month
• Participate in agency hotline (evening and day) rotation
• Other duties as needed at the direction of the Director of Program Services
