ABOUT THE POSITION:
The Stewardship Manager of Nantucket Management Unit oversees the day to day management of Coskata Coatue Wildlife Refuge along with managing the partnerships associated with Great Point National Wildlife Refuge (USFWS), and the Nantucket Conservation Foundation. The Stewardship Manager also represents the organization to the community and actively advocates for The Trustees. This diverse property is made up of 1117 acres and includes barrier beach, old-growth forest, and coastal grasslands habitats, as well as lighthouse, maintenance, and storage outbuildings. The property also includes two buildings used for equipment maintenance, housing and offices.
The Stewardship Manager reports to the Senior Stewardship Manager for the Islands, and participates as a key member of the Stewardship team. The Coskata Coatue Stewardship Manager is The Trustees only full-time, year-round employee on Nantucket.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Consulting with regional engagement staff, oversee and manage property tours and engagement programs highlighting the property’s cultural, recreational and ecological significance.
Oversee and manage Oversand Vehicle Permit programs, gatehouse operations and wildlife refuge and reservation rules enforcement.
Work with program leaders and regional staff to develop, manage and implement the strategic vision for the property and set annual goals based on the TTOR strategic plan.
In consultation with The Trustees’ Ecology Program, assist with the protection and management of significant natural resources, including but not limited to: invasive species control, rare species protection, and especially, the implementation of state and federal shorebird protection guidelines.
Recruit and sustain a high-performing team that includes up to 10 seasonal staff.
Oversee and implement the business operations and financial management of all activities on the properties, including: OSV permit sales, tour scheduling and revenue, merchandise sales.
Oversee and manage the visitor experience on Coskata Coatue by providing a high-quality customer service experience, updating and maintaining passive and active visitor interfaces, and collecting/incorporating visitor feedback into planning efforts.
Working with regional staff, set and manage revenue goals and budgets for the property annually.
Oversee and perform the stewardship, preservation and maintenance of the properties’ historic, cultural and ecological resources in accordance with organizational guidelines.
Build, expand, and diversify effective coalitions with a variety of internal and external stakeholders, including staff, local communities, partners, donors, and volunteers.
Actively work to develop programs and strategic partnerships with organizations and individuals to engage broader audiences and increase visitation.
QUALIFICATIONS:
A strong desire and commitment to the mission of The Trustees.
Proven leadership skills and a demonstrated ability to effectively manage people. Resume should show roles with progressive management and at least 3 years of experience managing a team of more than 3 people.
Proven ability to work independently.
Demonstrated experience working on public properties and with volunteers.
Demonstrated experience working in visitor services or with community members on public properties or projects.
Experience managing coastal landscapes/beaches is desirable.
Familiarity and/or experience managing invasive plants and rare species desirable.
Experience managing and developing volunteer programs.
Proven organizational skills which clearly demonstrate the ability to balance and manage multiple staff, the assets of the property, the needs of the visitor.
Proven property management skills including basic tool and equipment maintenance; chainsaw use, building systems awareness, and barrier beach management guidelines.
Budgetary and financial management skills.
Excellent written, verbal, and in person communication skills to work across internal reporting structures, stakeholder groups and in multiple mediums.
Computer skills (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
Candidate must be more than proficient in excel.
A Bachelor’s degree in Wildlife or Park Management, Recreational Management or another natural resource field and a minimum of six years of progressive experience. Or, 12+ years of experience in the field.
A valid driver’s license, as well as a satisfactory driving record as outlined in The Trustees’ driving policy.
A satisfactory criminal background check (CORI and SORI).
