The Assistant Camp Director will report to the Director of Education and will serve as the field supervisor and aquatics manager for MMA’s Discovery Camp and will be the primary teacher for the Naturalist Leadership Program.
Responsibilities and Tasks:
– Help coordinate and facilitate training for the Discovery Camp’s Environmental Education (EE) Instructors
-Assist the Education Director with evaluating and supporting instructors by observing programs, assisting with waterfront supervision, reviewing lesson plans and other necessary tasks needed to enhance the Discovery Camp’s programs
-Serve as the primary lifeguard during waterfront camp activities
-Ensure that EE instructors are following camp rules and regulations
-Help with camper registration each week
-Motivate staff around the Education Department’s objectives
-Inventory equipment needed for programs and ensure proper equipment use by instructors
-Participate in and promote MMA events and programs outside of the education department
-Identify emerging needs and assist the Director in developing plans to respond as needed
-Be the primary instructor for the Naturalist Leadership Program
-Fill in as a Discovery Camp instructor as needed
-Must be at least 23 to be considered for the position
Preference given to candidates that:
-Have a Bachelor’s degree from four-year college or university and at least 2 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
-Are at least 25 years old
-Have been Lifeguard, CPR, and First Aid certified for at least 2 years (required)
-Currently have above certifications or is willing to be certified prior to camp
-Have prior supervisory experience
-Have experience in youth programming and lesson plan development in a camp or other outdoor educational environment
-Can multi-task and efficiently perform required duties
-Have strong written and verbal communication skills
-Have strong organizational skills
-Enjoy working in a fast-paced environment and have the ability to move, stand, and walk frequently, with or without accommodation
-Have a fun, outgoing personality and are willing to work outside in inclement weather and occasionally at night and on weekends
-Preferred background in environmental education, natural sciences, or outdoor recreation
Compensation:
$5000 plus private housing on Nantucket, larger stipend may be available if you have your own housing
Dates of Employment: Applicant must be available from May 26, 2016 through August 25, 2016
